The Kotzen Scholarship is Simmons’ highest honor that recognizes distinction in the areas of study abroad, academic research, and intellectual vigor. The Gilbert and Marcia Kotzen Scholars Program is a merit scholarship competition that honors the top students who are eager to receive a life-changing education at Simmons University.
About Simmons University
In Boston, Massachusetts, there is a private university called Simmons University (formerly known as Simmons College). John Simmons, a producer of clothes, founded it in 1899. Its organization was modified, and it became a university in 2018. Its graduate programs are co-ed but its undergraduate program is geared toward women.
The New England Commission of Higher Education has given Simmons its seal of approval. By 2020, undergraduate applications were accepted for 83 percent of those who applied. The university is split into two campuses, one of which contains nine Georgian-style residential buildings and the other of which has five academic buildings, comprising a total of 12 acres (4.9 ha) in the Fenway-Kenmore area. Between 1,736 and 4,527 graduate and undergraduate students are enrolled at the university.
The Sharks are the NCAA Division III athletic teams that represent it. In the Fenway-Kenmore section of Boston, Massachusetts, Simmons University now has two campuses. The Academic Campus is a single campus that houses five academic buildings. Nine residential buildings for undergraduate students are located on the other side, also known as the Residential site. The Boston Women’s Heritage Trail includes the original location of the Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work.
Kotzen Scholarship – Benefits
The Kotzen Scholarship covers all costs for tuition, lodging, and board in addition to an extra $3,000 for extracurricular activities like study abroad, research assistance, and other things. This scholarship, which replaces any prior merit awards, is given for four years of full-time undergraduate education.
Eligibility for Kotzen Scholarship
The following requirements must be met by applicants for the Kotzen Scholarship:
- Recruit as a first-year student for the fall semester.
- Since Simmons doesn’t require students to take standardized tests, you can decide whether to do so when submitting your admissions application. A 28 on the ACT or higher and 1300 on the SAT are advised for test takers who decide to submit their results.
- An English proficiency test must be submitted by non-native English speakers (TOEFL/IELTS, TOEFL fundamentals, SAT/ACT scores, or Duolingo English Test).
- Unweighted GPA of 3.3 or higher College preparatory coursework that includes a high-level math course during, or before, your final year of high school
- A history of enrolling in honors, AP, and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, as offered by their high school systems
The Honors Program at Simmons frequently attracts students who match the aforementioned requirements.
How to Apply
A résumé listing activities and affiliations is required along with a short answer and formal essay in response to the questions below for the Kotzen Scholarship application. By December 1, students must send their essays and resumes in PDF or Word Doc format via email with the subject line “Kotzen Application.” The student’s entire name and birthdate should be on each page of the document.
Please note that we will not convert or accept incompatible files (such as Google Docs, Pages, etc.); the student should present a workable file in the appropriate format (PDF or Word).
Essay prompts
- What would you do with an additional $3,000 in annual funding (for study abroad, short-term courses, summer internship tuition, and/or research support)?
- Essay formally (no more than 500 words): Some claim that leaders are “made,” as opposed to “born,” while others maintain the opposite position, according to which leaders are “made.” In an essay, support one side or the other of the argument. To prove your point, give an example of a successful leader from history or your own life.
Candidates selected as finalists for scholarships will have to go through an interview in February.
