About the University of Michigan and Fellowship
Two regional campuses, one in Dearborn and one in Flint, make up the University of Michigan. Ann Arbor is home to the university’s main campus. The Organic Act on March 18, 1837, created the Board of Regents, which oversees the university. The Board of Regents is made up of eight members who are chosen at large in state elections held every two years for consecutive eight-year terms.
The LSA Collegiate Fellowship Program supports outstanding academics who are devoted to diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) in the academy and who are studying in one of the three divisions of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA): social sciences, natural sciences, or humanities.
To support DEI in higher education, LSA wants academics who will teach, mentor, do research, publish, serve, and engage in service. Scholars who have shown a capacity to incorporate critical viewpoints from nontraditional educational backgrounds and career paths into their work, as well as those who have a scholarly understanding of the experiences of groups that have historically been underrepresented or marginalized in higher education, are of particular interest to the program.

Benefits
LSA Collegiate Fellows will receive a beginning salary of $66,000* with benefits for up to two years, as well as money to cover conference and research costs. Fellows will spend their time conducting independent research during the fellowship in addition to taking part in pedagogical development initiatives like the LSA Teaching Academy and classroom teaching/engagement. Additionally, tenure-track jobs will be made available to all LSA Collegiate Fellows to start right away after the fellowship time. Candidates may occasionally be hired from this program directly into tenure-track posts depending on their degree of preparedness.
The tenure-track offers made to scholars will include a competitive salary, research assistance, and perks that are acceptable for assistant professors in the relevant department(s), regardless of whether they start with a fellowship or are hired straight to the tenure track.
*The Department of Economics can provide its Fellows a bonus to the regular Collegiate Fellows’ income because of the kind assistance of its wealthy alumni. In the case of Economics and Political Science, predoctoral fellowships, the doctoral degree must be earned before July 1, 2025. Predoctoral fellows will start with a starting salary of $50,000 plus perks if they are accepted.
During the academic year, all Fellows are required to live in their assigned housing and participate in departmental lectures and associated events. Throughout their fellowship, participants will also get career guidance from a departmental mentor.
The National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) further offers cohort- and program-based activities intended to promote Fellows’ scholarly endeavors and professional growth while creating a community of academics dedicated to DEI-related topics. The tenure-track phase sees the continuation of this assistance.
LSA Collegiate Fellowship for Exceptional Scholars at the University of Michigan – Eligibility Criteria
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the LSA Collegiate Fellowship for Exceptional Scholars at the University of Michigan:
- The program will only take into account applications from applicants for the 2023 application cycle if they intend to base their primary scholarly residence in one of the LSA units indicated below.
- Doctoral degrees should be earned between January 1, 2019, and July 1, 2024, for applicants in the natural sciences; between January 1, 2021, and July 1, 2024, for applicants in the social sciences or humanities (August 31, 2024, for applicants in the Department of Economics).
- No one who has received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan or who is a postdoctoral, faculty, or staff member there is qualified to apply.

Interview Process for LSA Collegiate Fellowship for Exceptional Scholars
A multi-stage process will be used to evaluate applicants in eligible fields based on their potential to contribute to higher education through their demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarship, teaching, service, and leadership, as well as evidence of contributions in their area of scholarship, teaching, and service. The NCID, academic department/program faculty, a college selection committee, and the applicable academic dean(s) will all assess applications.
Required for Application
- Curriculum vitae will be included in a comprehensive application.
- Your research strategy for the fellowship term should be included in your research/scholarship statement, which should be 2–3 pages long (*references, citations, calculations, and visuals do not count against the page limit).
- Diversity, equality, and inclusion statement (1-3 pages) outlining your demonstrated commitment to and involvement with these issues via your work in scholarship, research, teaching, mentorship, service, and/or participation. Your research/scholarship statement and teaching statements could overlap to some extent.
- A teaching statement (1-3 pages) that outlines your teaching philosophy and may include formal or informal teaching and mentoring experience.
- Abstract of the dissertation (1 page).
- Writing sample (2–3 examples; each sample may not exceed 35 pages). Research papers, whether published or unpublished, journal articles, and dissertation chapters are some examples. The page limit does not include appendices, images, references, citations, or formulae.
- Three (and no more than four) letters of recommendation. Reference letters cannot be submitted by applicants on behalf of their referees.
Note: A 5- to 10-page declaration of future research intentions in chemistry should be submitted by applicants, along with a one-page executive summary.
