About Samford University and Scholarship
Private Baptist institution Samford University is located in Homewood, Alabama. Baptists established Howard College in 1841. 5,791 students from 49 states, 1 U.S. territory, and 16 other countries attended the institution in the autumn of 2023.
Samford University, a private, segregated college, was in some ways shielded from the Civil Rights Movement’s leaders and demonstrators in the 1950s and early 1960s. By inviting the student body presidents of adjacent historically black Miles College as guests, the Samford Student Government Association opposed a segregated concert by the Birmingham Symphony that was conducted on campus.
The 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibited segregation at private institutions. The school’s administrators initially refrained from declaring their support for desegregation. For instance, because it would have to formally declare desegregation, the institution decided against applying for the NDEA Student Loan Program in 1965–1966. The most imminent threat to losing accreditation was posed to Cumberland School of Law. Audrey Lattimore Gaston was the first black student accepted at Samford in 1967.
Desegregation was implemented throughout the whole institution. The first African American student to reside on campus was Elizabeth Sloan Ragland, who did so in the fall of 1969. The institution revealed on June 1, 2020, that a memorial will be erected to recognize “the sacrifices of many African Americans for the mission and vision of Samford University even in days when their efforts were invisible or barely acknowledged.”
It notably mentioned Harry, an enslaved servant, and Gaston, who perished attempting to save pupils from the 1854 fire. On February 15, 2022, the memorial underwent a formal public dedication.
Featuring 170 undergraduate majors, minors, and specializations, Samford University is a Christian institution that provides both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university’s divisions include the School of the Arts, the Howard College of Arts and Sciences, the Brock School of Business, the Beeson Divinity School, the Orlean Beeson School of Education, the Cumberland School of Law, the Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing, the McWhorter School of Pharmacy, the School of Health Professions, and the School of Public Health. The professor-to-student ratio at Samford University is one to thirteen. Around two-thirds of the university’s classrooms have less than 20 pupils.
Students who commit to respect Samford University’s traditions of upholding its beliefs while seeking to have a positive impact on their communities and the rest of the world are awarded the Marion Scholarship.
The Davis and Marvin Mann Legacy and additional Samford scholarships, among others, may be coupled with the $13,000 average Marion Scholar award. This award, however, cannot be used in conjunction with the Crosland Scholarship. Competitive freshmen must be completely admitted to Samford and have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 to be considered for this award. Competitive transfer candidates have at least 24 credits of undergraduate courses and an average college GPA of 3.0. There is no need for a second application. Marion Scholarship winners are required to fulfill Samford University’s code of principles and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in all of their coursework.
