Imperial College London, commonly referred to as Imperial, is a prestigious public research university found in London, England. Its history can be traced back to Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, who predicted a cultural area in London that included iconic institutions like the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and several royal colleges.

By royal license, the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines, and the City and Guilds of London Institute were merged to form Imperial College London in 1907. Queen Elizabeth II opened the Imperial College Business School in 2004 after the university merged with St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School to become the Imperial College School of Medicine in 1988.

A major emphasis of Imperial College London is on business, science, engineering, and medicine. South Kensington is the location of the university’s main campus, where the majority of its teaching and research operations take place. Additionally, there is a second campus in White City that acts as a center for business and innovation. Imperial has an academic health science center that is made up of a network of teaching hospitals spread around London. The university became an autonomous institution in 2007 after being a part of the University of London. 59% of Imperial College London’s student body is international, coming from about 140 different countries. This indicates that the college has a very diverse student body.

The university consistently receives high marks both domestically and internationally. Imperial was placed first overall in the United Kingdom in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). According to the REF statistics, 96.6% of Imperial’s research is rated as “internationally excellent” (30.3% receiving a 3*) or “world-leading” (66.3% receiving the maximum 4* level).

The college has made a significant effort to commercialize its research, helped in part by its dependable technology transfer firm, Imperial Innovations, which has played a key role in the establishment of many spin-out businesses based on university research. Imperial College London has played a significant role in the creation of fiber optics and the discovery of penicillin, among other scientific and technical achievements.

During the 2021–2022 academic year, Imperial had a competitive acceptance rate, with 11.1% of undergraduate applicants and 13.0% of postgraduate applicants accepted. For undergraduates, the ratio of applications to admissions was 9:1, while for postgraduates, it was 7.7:1.

The Marjorie McDermott Scholarship is available to female students enrolling in MSc programs at Imperial College London. Each year, this scholarship helps up to two women. Those who are part-time MSc students are encouraged to apply in their second year of study.

Eligibility Criteria for the Marjorie McDermott Scholarship

Candidates are advised to meet the following conditions to be qualified for the Marjorie McDermott Scholarship at Imperial College London:

  • Every fall, women enrolling in MSc programs at Imperial are invited to apply for the Marjorie McDermott Scholarship. If you are a part-time MSc student, you can apply in your second year of study. Up to two women will receive scholarships each year through this approach.
  • Applicants must have an equivalent degree or a first-class undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field.
  • It is not permissible for students to hold several scholarships concurrently.

Application Procedure for Marjorie McDermott Scholarship

Please email the PG administrator (mathsmsc.administrator@imperial.ac.uk) by 17.00 on November 18, 2023, with your resume and a one-page personal statement that addresses the evaluation criteria listed below. In no more than 400 words, the personal statement ought to demonstrate:

  • Dedication to EDI causes
