About the University of Queensland and the Scholarship
One of the six “sandstone universities,” or the oldest institution in each state, is the institution of Queensland. In addition, UQ is a founding member of edX, the top Group of Eight in Australia, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, which does extensive worldwide research.
Southwest of Brisbane’s central business district, the main St. Lucia campus takes up most of the riverfront inner neighborhood of St. Lucia. Queensland is home to several UQ campuses and facilities, the largest of which are the Gatton campus and the Mayne Medical School. The UQ-Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana, United States, and the UQ North America headquarters in Washington, D.C., are two of UQ’s international locations.
On December 10, 1909, the State Parliament passed an act creating the University of Queensland to mark the 50th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the colony of New South Wales. The Act authorized a senate of 20 persons to oversee the university, and Sir William MacGregor, the new Governor, was chosen to serve as the first chancellor and RH Roe as the vice-chancellor. Following the governor’s relocation to the Fernberg home of Bardon, Old Government House… [formerly Government House] on George Street was set aside for the university, igniting the initial discussions over the ideal location for the institution.
The First World War slowed the university’s expansion, but as demand for higher education in Australia grew following the war, university enrollments for research and education soared. Early in the 1920s, the expanding institution was forced to hunt for a campus with larger space because its initial location in Brisbane’s George Street had limited growth potential.
Mr. Henry Osiecki and Dr. Vera Osiecki founded the Osiecki Scholarship for Classics in 2014 through Bio Concepts Pty Ltd. It is funded by an annual revenue from the Osiecki Scholarship for Classics Endowment.
