About Royal Holloway, University of London

The federal University of London’s constituent college, Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL), was initially established as Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. It contains six schools, 21 academic divisions, and over 10,500 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 100 different nations. The campus is situated 19 miles (31 km) from the heart of London, in Egham, Surrey.

The Victorian businessman and philanthropist Thomas Holloway established the Egham campus in 1879. Queen Victoria formally inaugurated Royal Holloway College as an all-female institution in 1886. In the year 1900, it joined the University of London. Male postgraduate students were initially accepted to the college in 1945, and the first 100 male undergraduate students were enrolled in 1965.

Royal Holloway and Bedford institution, another former all women’s institution in London, united in 1985. The combined college was given the name Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (RHBNC), which is still used by the Act of Parliament as the institution’s legally registered name. It became an independent institution within the Institution of London in 2022. The Founder’s Building, a red-brick structure with a Grade I listing that was inspired by France’s Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley, dominates the site. The institution’s annual income for 2021–2022 was £201.1 million, of which £17.8 million came from grants and contracts for research, with an expenditure of £232.4 million.

Out of 90 universities in England and Wales at one point, Royal Holloway was rated second for the percentage of students who obtained graduate employment. The institution, however, is ranked 77th out of 126 universities in the UK by Complete Institution Guide 2016 because of a decline in graduate employability during 2007–2008, with a graduate potential of just 62.2%. With a graduating prospect of 73.5%, Complete University Guide 2020 reports that this number is beginning to rise once again. The National Student Survey 2014 found that Royal Holloway was in the top 25% of UK institutions for overall satisfaction (89%).
