About Rutgers University and Scholarship

A public land-grant research university with four campuses in New Jersey, Rutgers University (/rtrz/; RU) is also known as Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Rutgers was founded in 1766 under the name Queen’s College and was connected to the Dutch Reformed Church. It is the eighth-oldest college in the nation and the second-oldest in New Jersey after Princeton University. Nine colonial colleges in the United States were founded before the American Revolution.

In 1825, Colonel Henry Rutgers, whose significant gift to the institution had helped to stabilize its financial status during a period of turmoil, was honored by having Queen’s College renamed Rutgers College in his honor. For the majority of its existence, Rutgers was a private liberal arts college; but, after being renamed The State University of New Jersey by legislation approved by the New Jersey Legislature in 1945 and 1956, it became a coeducational public research university.

The organization belongs to the Universities Research Association, the Association of American Universities, and the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools approves of it.

In the 2022 U.S. News & World Report rankings of American institutions, the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is placed 23rd overall among public universities.
