While various other campuses are dispersed around Victoria, its main campus is located in Parkville, an inner district to the north of Melbourne’s CBD.

The University of Melbourne was founded by the colony of Victoria in the 19th century and is one of the six sandstone institutions in Australia. It belongs to the Group of Eight, Universitas 21, the McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Since 1872, there have been several residential colleges affiliated with the university that provide lodging for students and faculty as well as hosting academic, sporting, and cultural events. There are twelve colleges, both on the main campus and in the neighboring suburbs.

The university is divided into ten separate academic divisions and collaborates with a wide range of research institutes and centers, including the Grattan Institute, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. In addition to the Melbourne Business School, Melbourne Law School, and Melbourne Medical School, the university offers fifteen graduate degrees. The University of Melbourne was ranked first in Australia and fourteenth overall in the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings.
