About the University of Birmingham and Scholarship
The Queen’s College, which is associated with William Sands Cox and his desire to establish a medical school that was completely Christian in comparison to the modern London medical schools, is where the university’s early roots can be found. Further investigation found that John Tomlinson, the first surgeon at the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary and later at the Birmingham General Hospital, served as the inspiration for the Birmingham Medical School. These courses were the first of their kind to be held in England or Wales, and they took place in the winter of 1767–1768. At the General Hospital, established in 1779, medical apprentices performed the first clinical teaching.
Cox started teaching in December 1825, but the medical school that sprang from the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary wasn’t created until 1828. The Clinical Hospital in Birmingham received Queen Victoria’s patronage and was permitted to use the monicker “The Queen’s Hospital.” It was England’s first rural teaching hospital. The medical college adopted the name Queen’s College in 1843.
On March 24, 1900, Queen Victoria awarded the institution a royal charter, in great part because of Chamberlain’s excitement. On the Bournbrook side of their estate, the Calthorpe family offered 25 acres (10 hectares) of property in July. The Birmingham University Act 1900 was approved by the Court of Governors, putting the royal charter into operation on May 31.
With Chamberlain serving as the institution’s inaugural chancellor and Sir Oliver Lodge serving as its inaugural president, the transfer of Mason University College to the new University of Birmingham was finished. The Mermaid from Josiah Mason’s coat of arms, which can be seen in the sinister chief of the university shield and his college’s double-headed lion in the dexter, is a reminder of his legacy.
