About the University of Sussex and Scholarship

In Falmer, East Sussex, England, the University of Sussex is a public institution with a research emphasis. Most of it is included within the administrative boundaries of Brighton and Hove. The South Downs National Park flanks its wide campus and provides easy access to Brighton’s city center, which is only 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) away. The school received its Royal Charter in August 1961, making it the first of the generation of universities made of plate glass.

More than one-third of its students are enrolled in postgraduate programs, while just under one-third of its staff members are foreign-born. The diverse community of over 20,000 students at Sussex includes more than 1,000 academics from more than 140 different countries, with about one-third being foreign students.

The institution’s yearly expenditures were £377.4 million while its annual revenue was £345.2 million during the fiscal year 2021–2022. In addition to having a faculty that includes a Crafoord Prize winner, 15 Fellows of the Royal Society, 10 Fellows of the British Academy, 24 Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences, and five Nobel Prize winners, Sussex University also has 15 Fellows of the Royal Society. By 2011, many of its faculty members had also won the Bancroft Prize, Order of the British Empire, and Royal Society of Literature Prize. Diplomats, politicians, famous scientists, and activists are just a few examples of alumni.

The institution, which is a signatory to the Erasmus charter, provides more than 400 undergraduate programs, 210 taught postgraduate programs, and more than 70 PhD programs. It has about 1,000 teaching and research staff members, of whom about 300 are dedicated to doing research. Additionally, the institution has more than 1,200 PhD students spread out throughout its several Schools. The maximum annual tuition that a university in the United Kingdom may charge undergraduates with home fee status is £9,250.

In the 2021 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the University of Sussex was ranked 160th overall and 20th in the UK. The institution was rated 19th nationwide by The Sunday Times in 2021. In 2017, the institution was ranked 15th in the UK by the Complete Institution Guide. According to the 2017 QS World University Rankings, the university came in at number 187 worldwide.

There are several research partnerships between Sussex and other higher education institutions, as well as international governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutes. For instance, the Harvard Sussex program is a well-established academic partnership between the universities of Sussex and Harvard that focuses on public policy regarding chemical and biological weapons. The HSP issues a quarterly publication called the CBW Conventions Bulletin. Recent examples include the Sussex-Lund Partnership in Middle Eastern and North African Studies, the Sussex-Cornell Partnership, and the Sussex-Bocconi-Renmin Intrapreneurship Hub. The Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts is also coordinated by Sussex. One of the eight universities in the Tyndall Center network is Sussex.

Since 2003, the Sports Scholarship Scheme has assisted students in realizing their athletic potential, with results including Olympic competition, national championships, and gold in BUCS competitions. If you’re a gifted student athlete, the school offers extensive Sports Scholarships that give a network of support, financial aid, and the chance to get mentoring from elite athletes to help you grow as a sportsperson and student.
