Academic associations like the European University Association and the Association of Commonwealth Universities are members of the university. Additionally, the university belongs to the London-based Screen Studies Group. Among the graduates of Birkbeck are five Nobel laureates, several political figures, British prime ministers, and members of the British Parliament.

The Queen’s Anniversary Prize was given to Birkbeck’s Centre for Brain Function and Development in 2005 for its work on the human brain. 2010 saw Birkbeck in the Times Higher Education University of the Year Award shortlist.

In terms of psychology, Birkbeck was placed 95th in the world in 2021 by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. QS World University Rankings routinely place the university in the top 100 worldwide for both philosophy and English Language & Literature. According to the QS World University Rankings 2020 and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, Birkbeck is one of the top 350 universities in the world.

The UK university rankings’ methodologies unfairly penalize Birkbeck, which stated that “despite having highly rated teaching and research, other factors caused by its unique teaching model and unrelated to its performance push it significantly lower the ratings.” Birkbeck announced its decision to withdraw from the rankings in 2018.

In The Guardian’s 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, Birkbeck was placed 13th, and in the Times Higher Education’s similar ranking, it was ranked 26th. Birkbeck was in the top 25% of multi-faculty higher education institutions in the UK according to the 2008 RAE findings. At 159 higher education institutions in the UK, the quality of research in a variety of fields was evaluated by the RAE.

The top five national contributions came from Birkbeck and came from the fields of psychology, history, classics, archaeology, earth sciences, and history of art, film, and visual media. In the REF2014, eight submissions from Birkbeck achieved a 100% rating for the research environment, placing them in the top 20 nationwide. A rating of “world-leading” (4*) or “internationally excellent” (3*) was given to 73% of Birkbeck’s research.

Despite having highly rated teaching and research, Birkbeck announced in 2018 that it would leave the UK university rankings because their methodologies unfairly penalize it because “other factors caused by its unique teaching model and unrelated to its performance push it significantly down the ratings.”
