About The Gates Scholarship
The Gates Scholarship will support 300 students a year, this started in 2018, for a total of 3,000 students throughout the program. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has a long history of supporting exceptional minority students from low-income households to reach their full potential, and with the introduction of this initiative in 2017, it is continuing that tradition. This esteemed scholarship program is founded on data showing that removing financial obstacles to higher education may help high-potential, low-income minority students achieve in their coursework, graduate from college, and remain leaders throughout their life.
The Gates Scholarship will provide Scholars with additional support in addition to financial assistance by interacting with them and their institutions in a variety of ways to ensure that they have access to the resources and services they need from the first to the last day of classes, through graduation, and the transition to their desired careers.
Outstanding minority high school graduates from low-income families are eligible for The Gates Scholarship (TGS), a competitive last-dollar prize. The scholarship is given each year to outstanding student leaders to assist them in reaching their full potential.

Benefits:
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the method utilized by a Scholar’s institution or university will be used to establish the complete cost of attendance* that is not already covered by other financial help and the anticipated family contribution. The cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, room & board, books, transportation, and any additional possible personal costs.
Eligibility Criteria for The Gates Scholarship
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Gates Scholarship:
- A senior in high school
- At least one member of the racial or the following ethnic groups: American citizens who identify as African-American, Asian & Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaska Native, or Hispanic
- Pell-eligible
- A national or permanent resident of the US
- Having a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a scale of 4.0 (or an equivalent) and being in good academic standing.
Additionally, a student must intend to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a private, public, or not-for-profit college or university in the US that has received US accreditation. Proof of tribal enrollment is necessary for American Indians and Alaska Natives.

An excellent applicant will possess:
- An excellent high school record (in the top 10% of their graduating class);
- Leadership skills that have been demonstrated, such as by involvement in volunteer work, extracurricular activities, or other activities
- Exceptional personal success abilities (such as emotional maturity, drive, persistence, etc.)
