A public research university in Hamburg, Germany is known as the University of Hamburg (German: Universität Hamburg, usually abbreviated as UHH). On March 28, 1919, the Academic College (Akademisches Gymnasium), the Hamburg Colonial Institute (Hamburgisches Kolonialinstitut), and the General Lecture System (Allgemeines Vorlesungswesen) were combined to form the new organization. The main campus is situated in Rotherbaum’s center, while linked research centers are spread out all around the city-state.

Funding amount and funding duration
The maximum financing amount each month is €850. Individual doctorate researchers may get merit scholarships of €1,000 per month, depending on funding availability (on average, 2-3 merit scholarships are given out every cycle). Merit scholarships are given out for a total of two semesters, or 12 months. For a scholarship, you can apply again. The maximum financing length in well-founded extraordinary instances is three years.
Eligibility Criteria for Universität Hamburg Merit Scholarships
You qualify for funding if you
- have attended Universität Hamburg for at least two semesters in your field of study, are working toward a degree (doctoral researchers and students in two-year master’s degree programs can apply after one completed semester);
- do not have German citizenship;
- are not eligible for the federal student loan program.
Those who are ineligible for financing
- International students who meet the conditions of Section 8 of the Bundesgesetz über individuelle Förderung der Ausbildung (BAföG), Germany’s federal training aid legislation.
Selection criteria
- good to exceptional academic standing;
- extra knowledge and skills that can be independently verified;
- presentations, publications, awards;
- additional specialized skills; Social and/or intercultural activities that have previously been funded (such as proof of volunteer labor)
- applicant’s requirements/social context.
Interview Date, and Process for Universität Hamburg Merit Scholarships
A committee made up of faculty and ASTA (student council) members grants merit awards. After the application deadline, about 6 to 8 weeks later, the institution will email you a notification. Check the web portal for the most recent information on the progress of your application.
Required Documents for Application
Before the application period closes, kindly provide the program coordinator with documentation of your residency permit. Documents must be emailed to stipend-internationalstudent@uni-hamburg.de because there is still limited access to the University Administration building. Your papers won’t be kept and will be removed after they have been seen.
Contact the program coordinator if you don’t have a residence permit (for instance, if you’re an EU citizen or for another reason).
Application Process for Universität Hamburg Merit Scholarships

Click the link for the application period you choose, then enter your STiNE ID to log in: Fill out an application by October 15th. Then, you will receive an invitation to sign up and finish your application. The following files must be uploaded to the online application portal:
- CV
- Use this form (PDF) for your letter of motivation.
- evidence of social and/or intercultural activities, if appropriate
- record of accomplishments: a printout from STiNE or a collection of course certificates. The final certificate is sent in by doctorate researchers and master’s students.
- 2 professors or young professors at Universität Hamburg’s assessments. In appropriate circumstances, additional Universität Hamburg faculty members may also create assessments.
