About the University of Bradford and Scholarship

The rich history of the University of Bradford can be traced back to its origins as the Mechanics Institute, established in 1832 to address the growing need for skilled workers in the city. This early institution laid the groundwork for what would later become the University of Bradford. In 1882, the Mechanics Institute transitioned into the Bradford Technical College, offering a range of practical skills relevant to the workforce.

The university underwent transformative changes in 1957 when it evolved into the Bradford Institute of Technology, assuming responsibility for higher education courses. The construction of key campus buildings, such as the Richmond Building, initiated in 1963, marked a period of expansion. The Horton Building and Chesham Building followed, situated on the opposite side of Richmond Road, further enhancing the university’s physical presence.

In 1966, the University of Bradford received its charter of incorporation, a significant milestone that formally established it as an independent institution. Notably, the inaugural chancellor was Harold Wilson, the Prime Minister at that time. The university continued to evolve, gaining international recognition in the 1970s as a prominent center for Yugoslav studies. The establishment of the University of Bradford Postgraduate School of Yugoslav Studies and the Research Unit in Yugoslav Studies underscored its commitment to this academic field.

The early 2000s witnessed a new chapter with the initiation of the ‘Ecoversity’ project in 2005. This sustainability initiative, combined with an £84 million campus redevelopment, positioned the University of Bradford as a leader in environmental responsibility among academic institutions.

Research has been a cornerstone of the university’s identity, with consistent recognition for its strength in knowledge transfer. Rankings in The Times Good University Guide highlighted Bradford’s standing, placing it 7th in the UK for graduate employment in 2005 and 2nd in 2006. The university has consistently ranked among the Top 50 English Universities for research funding.

An impressive staff-student ratio further solidifies the university’s commitment to providing a quality academic experience. Placing in the 2nd quartile for staff-student ratios in The Independent, The Times, and The Guardian League Tables, the University of Bradford demonstrates its dedication to maintaining an optimal learning environment.

To support its student community, the University of Bradford offers various discounts and bursaries. However, the university ensures fairness by allowing students to claim only one discount or bursary, promoting equitable distribution of available benefits. This multifaceted history reflects the university’s resilience, adaptability, and commitment to academic excellence.
