About Webster University and Scholarship

Webster University, nestled in Webster Groves, Missouri, stands as a distinguished private institution with a rich history and a global footprint. Since its founding in 1915 by the Sisters of Loretto as Loretto College, it has evolved into a dynamic university with multiple branch locations across the United States and international sites in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 2021, Webster boasted an enrollment of 6,741 students, contributing to an impressive alumni network of approximately 170,000 graduates worldwide.

Originally established as a Catholic women’s college, Loretto College, Webster has witnessed significant transformations over the years. In 1924, the college’s name transitioned to Webster College. Notably, the university played a pioneering role in breaking racial barriers during the early 1940s in St. Louis. Amid segregationist policies, Webster College became a pivotal player in the integration battles by admitting Mary Aloyse Foster, a black female student, in 1943. This historic move marked a significant step toward racial integration, challenging prevailing norms. Webster College continued its commitment to diversity by admitting Irene Thomas, a Catholic African-American woman from St. Louis, as a music major in the fall of 1945.

When Webster University admitted its first male students in 1962, it marked a significant turning point in its history. Webster became the first Catholic college in the US to be fully run by laypeople when, five years later, in 1967, the Sisters of Loretto gave ownership to a lay Board of Directors. In 1983, Webster College changed its name to Webster University to better reflect its expanded goals and mission.

Academically, Webster University has always been a model student body. Its 2023 U.S. News & World Report ranking of 22nd among regional universities (Midwest) is evidence of its dedication to providing excellent instruction. In collaboration with Beijing Language and Culture University, the university operates a Confucius Institute to foster intercultural communication and understanding. However, US Senator Josh Hawley called for the closing of Webster University’s Confucius Institute in 2019, emphasizing the challenges involved in these partnerships.

Elite international students can be drawn to Webster University with the availability of the International Graduate Scholarships for the 2024–2025 academic year. Assisting highly qualified international students enrolled in the university’s graduate programs is the aim of this program. The honor demonstrates Webster’s commitment to creating a welcoming and diverse learning environment and providing opportunities for overseas students to develop and contribute to the university’s illustrious past.
