The University of Alberta Alexander Rutherford Scholarship for Undergraduate Students in Canada for 2023

The University of Alberta is now accepting applications for its partially funded Alexander Rutherford Scholarship.

About the University of Alberta and Scholarship

The University of Alberta is a public research institution in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (commonly known as U of A or UAlberta). Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, the institution’s first president, created it in 1908. The Post-secondary Learning Act made it possible. As a “comprehensive academic and research university” (CARU), the institution provides a variety of academic and professional programs that often result in undergraduate and graduate-level degrees. According to important college and university rankings, it is one of Canada’s best public institutions.

Four campuses in Edmonton, an Augustana Campus in Camrose, and a staff center in the heart of Calgary make up the institution. On the south rim of the North Saskatchewan River valley, across and to the west of downtown Edmonton, the original north campus, which spans 50 city blocks and includes 150 buildings, was established. The 400 programs offered by the 18 faculties are attended by 39,000 students from Canada and 150 other nations.

The university plays a significant role in Alberta’s economy. It provided $19.4 billion in 2022, or more than 5% of Alberta’s GDP, to the provincial economy. Over 260,000 people have graduated from the University of Alberta, and alumni and faculty members have won 72 Rhodes Scholarships, three Nobel Prizes, and other honors. The Institution Act, approved during the first session of the then-new Legislative Assembly and sponsored by Premier Alexander C. Rutherford, established the institution as a single, public provincial university in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1906.

Alexander Rutherford, who held the distinction of serving as both Alberta’s first premier and minister of education, is honored by the name of this scholarship. He was well recognized for his fervent support of public education, particularly the University of Alberta, and for his colossal involvement in civic affairs. The prize honors senior high school student’s academic excellence and motivates them to seek post-secondary education.
