British Academy BA/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships in the UK for 2023

Application is now open for the British Academy BA/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships. Interested applicants are encouraged to send their applications in before the deadline date.

About British Academy and Fellowship

The British Academy, the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences, plays a crucial role in advancing these fields of study. They utilize the humanities and social sciences to gain a deeper understanding of the world and work towards a better future. The British Academy allocates substantial public funding to support individuals and organizations engaged in humanities and social sciences research and scholarship, both in the UK and internationally.

These funding opportunities cater to scholars at various stages of their academic careers and encompass a range of initiatives such as postdoctoral fellowships, Wolfson Research Professorships, Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships, small research grants, and British Academy Research Projects. The Academy’s Fellowship program reflects the diversity and excellence of expertise across these disciplines, and their policy work is dedicated to applying this knowledge to address public issues and promote societal well-being.

The specific purpose of the Fellowships mentioned in the provided text, which are funded by the Leverhulme Trust and other non-government sources and administered by the British Academy, is to offer established scholars a one-year research leave. During this period, academics can focus on advancing a major research project towards completion, while their regular teaching and administrative responsibilities are handled by a full-time replacement.

These Fellowships are tenable for one year and should commence in the autumn of 2023. The scheme is especially intended for individuals who have been unable to prioritize research due to other professional obligations. Thus, the primary goal of this program is to enable successful awardees to concentrate on advancing a significant research project to its conclusion.

Applicants are advised that if they have already applied for the Academy’s 2023-24 round of the Mid-Career Fellowship scheme, they are ineligible to apply for the BA/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship scheme in the autumn of 2023.

Eligibility Criteria for British Academy BA/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships

The Academy determines eligibility for these prizes without considering the age of the candidate or their existing rank (e.g., Lecturer, Professor). Instead, it is anticipated that recipients of prizes would be able to share the findings of their work not just through publications but also by incorporating them into their post-award academic careers. Support is appropriate for any humanities and social science topic of study. Candidates must also be employed by UK institutions.
