About Canon Collins Trust and Scholarship
The British Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (BDAF), mostly via the leadership of Ethel de Keyser, director of BDAF, and Canon John Collins, BDAF’s founder, formed the Educational Trust for Southern Africa in 1981. The Trust was renamed the Canon Collins Educational Trust for Southern Africa upon Canon Collins’ demise.
The Commonwealth Scholarships are nominated by the Canon Collins Trust. Every year, The Trust recommends 14 people for fully-funded Commonwealth Scholarships to pursue a PhD at any university in the United Kingdom. All applicants must apply for one of the six development themes that are the subject of available scholarships:
- Strengthening global peace, security, and governance
- Strengthening resilience and response to crises
- Access, inclusion, and opportunity
- Science and technology for development
- Strengthening health systems and capacity
- Promoting global prosperity

Each scholarship delivers:
- Flights from the Scholar’s home country to the UK and back after the award has been approved (the CSC will not cover the cost of flights for dependents or trips taken before the award is confirmed).
- Approved tuition costs: The CSC and the UK institution have an agreement that covers all costs; Scholars are not required to pay any portion of the tuition costs.
- Stipend (living allowance) of £1,347 per month or, for students attending institutions in the London metropolitan region, £1,652 per month (rates indicated at current levels).
- If appropriate, a clothing allowance for warmth.
- Grant for study-related travel to pay for domestic or international travel expenses. When permitted, a contribution is made toward the expense of doing fieldwork abroad (the price of one round-trip ticket in economy).
- Airfare for a paid midterm visit to the scholar’s home country, unless they have already obtained a return ticket for fieldwork or have plans to claim spouse and/or child allowances during their scholarship.
- Following are family allowances (rates reported at current levels):
- If a Scholar is traveling with their spouse but no children, they will get a spouse allowance of £290 per month for a maximum of nine months as long as they both reside at the same location in the UK (other restrictions apply if the spouse is not also receiving a scholarship).
- If a Scholar is traveling with their spouse and children in the UK, they will receive a spouse allowance of £290 per month, a child allowance of £290 per month for the first child, and a child allowance of $143 per month for the second and third children under the age of 16 (unless their spouse is also receiving a scholarship; other conditions apply).
- If a Scholar is traveling alone with their children but without a spouse, they are eligible for a child allowance of £576.61 per month for the first kid and £143 per month for any additional child under the age of 16 who lives with them at the same UK home.
Eligibility Criteria for Canon Collins Trust Commonwealth PhD Scholarships
Candidates are advised to meet the following conditions to be qualified for Canon Collins Trust Commonwealth PhD Scholarships:
- Being a citizen of, or having refugee status in, one of the nations listed below and residing there permanently in Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, or Lesotho
- Possess a first degree with an upper second class (2:1) honors level by October 2022, or a second class (2:2) degree plus an appropriate postgraduate degree (a Master’s degree).
- Have at least one UK university who might be your supervisor’s support mentioned on your application form.
- Need this scholarship and not be able to afford to study in the UK
- NOT be enrolled in a PhD program or an MPhil that leads to a PhD before September or October 2023 at an institution in the UK or your country of residence.
- Have delivered the necessary supplementary materials in the proper format.
