About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland Act of 1998 gives the Senate broad authority to employ personnel, administer and govern university operations and property, and oversee financial matters to further the goals of the institution. Based on the number of research publications that were published in prestigious journals, UQ placed first in 13 categories in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) first-ever global subject rankings, including biodiversity conservation.

UQ was in the top 50 globally in 20 categories according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. For sports-related subjects, UQ is first in Australia, second in the world, and for mineral & mining engineering, UQ is second in Australia, third in the world. With over twice as much production as the worldwide average, UQ is listed by Nature Index as the research university in the southern hemisphere in 2015 with the largest volume of research output in the multidisciplinary journals Nature and Science.

34 UQ academics were included in Clarivate’s list of Highly Cited Researchers in 2020. The university maintains a variety of multidisciplinary research institutes and centers at the national, state, and university levels in addition to disciplinary-focused teaching and research within the academic faculties. For instance, the Institute of Modern Languages, the University of Queensland Seismology Station, the Asia-Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, and Heron Island Research Station.

There are 11 residential colleges at the University of Queensland, with 10 of them being on the St. Lucia campus and one on the Gatton campus. The residential colleges’ organizing and representing the organization, the University of Queensland Intercollege Council, oversees all athletic and cultural activities and contests. Besides the three campuses, UQ offers other research and educational facilities. These places are largely used for research because it cannot be done on campus. However, they also house buildings that were leaders in education before the current campuses were built.

The UQ St Lucia ferry dock, the westernmost stop, and conclusion of the CityCat service, provides transportation to the university. The University of Queensland bus station at Chancellor’s Place in the west connects travelers to Brisbane’s inner west suburbs such as Indooroopilly, Toowong, and Milton; the UQ Lakes busway station in the east, the western terminus of the Eastern Busway, offers services to Brisbane’s inner south suburbs such as Woolloongabba, Carindale, and Mount Gravatt via the Eleanor Schonell Bridge. Translink also runs two bus stations on campus.
