About the University of Oxford and Scholarship

A coeducational research institution, The University of Oxford is located in Oxford, England. The oldest university in the English-speaking world and the second-oldest institution still in existence today, there is evidence of teaching as far back as 1096. In 1167, Henry II forbade English students from enrolling at the University of Paris, and it expanded quickly after that. Some professors moved north-east to Cambridge where they founded the University of Cambridge in response to conflicts between students and Oxford town residents in 1209. Both of the historic English universities are referred to as “Oxbridge” and have many things in common.

The university consists of 39 semi-autonomous component colleges, 4 permanent private halls, and a variety of academic departments divided into 4 divisions. Within the university, each college has its internal structure and activities and is a self-governing organization that controls its membership. Each student is a part of a college. There is no central campus, and all of its structures are dispersed across the city. Lectures, small-group tutorials in the colleges and residences, seminars, laboratory work, and occasionally additional tutorials offered by the core university faculties and departments make up the majority of the undergraduate curriculum at Oxford. Postgraduate instruction is mostly offered in a centralized setting.

Other noteworthy graduates from Oxford include 30 British prime ministers and other leaders of state and governments from throughout the world.

The University of Oxford has produced 160 Olympic medal winners among its graduates as of October 2022, including 73 Nobel Prize laureates, 4 Fields Medalists, and 6 Turing Award winners.
