About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

On April 16, 1910, the first candidates for the first UQ Senate were officially nominated and the institution of Queensland, the state’s first institution, was effectively created. An act of the State Parliament from 1909 created it. In 1911, schooling was first introduced at Brisbane’s Old Government House on George Street. Three faculties—Arts, Science, and Engineering—had 83 students in the first year, 60 of them men and 23 of them women. The University soon outgrew its location in the central city after the First World War. The Medical School is currently housed in Victoria Park, where a second location was acquired in 1922.

The University and the Queensland Agricultural College, the State’s two oldest institutions of higher learning, combined in 1990 in what is now Gatton, 80 kilometers west of Brisbane. The two oldest institutions of higher education in the State were united, considerably increasing enrollments. The two schools have worked together on teaching and research initiatives since the former Queensland Agricultural College’s first students were accepted in 1897.

The old Challinor Centre mental health hospital space was used by UQ to build a sizable campus in Ipswich, the provincial capital, in 1999. UQ taught at the USQ Ipswich location until 2016 to assist some students in completing their degrees. However, the University of Southern Queensland acquired ownership of this campus in January 2015.

The institution also holds top rankings in several engineering fields. Its positions in the fields of chemical engineering, civil engineering, material science and engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and mining and minerals engineering are as follows: third globally, 76-100 globally, 76-100 globally, 101-150 globally, and 76-100 globally, respectively.

UQ was ranked #1 in the world for biodiversity conservation and in the top 10 universities globally for 13 other areas in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) inaugural global subject rankings based on the number of research articles that were published in reputable journals.
