About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The University of Queensland, an institution with a rich and storied history, has played a significant role in shaping the educational landscape of Queensland, Australia, and beyond.
Officially founded in April 1910, the University traces its origins to a 1909 Act of State Parliament. Teaching commenced in 1911 within the historic confines of Old Government House in George Street, Brisbane, with three faculties—Arts, Science, and Engineering—and a modest cohort of 83 students, comprising 60 men and 23 women.
Following the aftermath of World War I, the University embarked on a period of rapid growth that led to the need for expansion beyond its inner-city location. In 1922, the acquisition of an additional site in Victoria Park, which is now occupied by the Medical School, was a crucial step forward.
Four years later, the pivotal contributions of Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and Miss Mary Emelia Mayne made it possible to secure the St Lucia site, where the University’s primary campus is situated today. Construction commenced at St Lucia in 1937, and the inaugural building, later named the Forgan Smith Building, was completed in 1939. It’s worth noting that during World War II, the St Lucia campus served as the advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.
In 1990, a significant merger occurred as the University joined forces with the Queensland Agricultural College, located at Gatton, which is about 80 kilometers west of Brisbane. This merger united the two oldest higher education institutions in the State and led to a substantial increase in enrollments. The Queensland Agricultural College has been educating students since 1897, and the collaboration between these two institutions has a long history of cooperation in teaching and research activities.

Eligibility Criteria for Flannery Foundation Residential Scholarship
Applicants are advised to meet the following requirements to be qualified for the Flannery Foundation Residential Scholarship at the University of Queensland:
- are a domestic student
- be a commencing student in 2023
- Enrollment in a Bachelor Program: You must be currently enrolled in or intend to enroll in any Bachelor Program at the university in the year the scholarship is awarded.
- Residency at an Approved Accommodation Provider: You should either be a resident at an Approved Accommodation Provider or intend to become one. This typically means you will be living in approved university accommodation.
- Residence in Regional, Rural, or Remote Areas: You must have resided in Regional, Rural, or Remote areas in Queensland, which are located more than 200 kilometers from Brisbane. This criterion is often used to support students from less urban areas.
Selection Criteria
The Flannery Foundation Residential Scholarship at the University of Queensland is dedicated to assisting permanent residents of Outer Regional, Remote, or Very Remote areas in Queensland that are located more than 200 kilometers from Brisbane. This scholarship aims to provide financial support to students who come from more remote regions, where access to educational opportunities and resources may be limited. If you fulfill these residency criteria, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship, which can help cover your accommodation expenses while pursuing your studies at the University of Queensland.
- Students from Very Remote Areas will be given precedence, then students from Remote Areas.
- The priority will go to students who have indicated additional types of educational disadvantage in their QTAC application if further differentiation between students is required.
Application Procedure for Flannery Foundation Residential Scholarship
Fill out the Flannery Foundation Residential Scholarship application form. Applicants will need the following:
- such as Centrelink documents, ATO statements, family income, or a personal statement, as proof of your financial plight.
- proof of regional/rural/remote residency
