Through Dorothy J. Killam’s will and contributions received throughout her lifetime, the Killam Scholarship and Prize Programmes were created in honor of Izaak Walton Killam. Their main objective is to support the Canada Council for the Arts and five Canadian institutions that provide advanced study and research. The Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies awards the UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships each year. The recipients of scholarships should: “Be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to achieve distinction in a profession,” according to Mrs. Killam. An unbalanced person should not be a Killam scholar. Intelligent differentiation should be based on moral character.

The most prominent rewards available to graduate students at UBC are the Killam Doctoral Scholarships. In the Affiliated Fellowships competition, the top 25 doctorate candidates get about 25 grants each year. The Killam Doctoral Scholarship currently offers a $30,000 yearly stipend for two years along with a $2,000 allowance for research-related travel over the 24 months of the scholarship*.On the UBC-Vancouver campus, recipients of the Killam Doctoral Scholarships also become Four Year Fellowship holders and, if qualified, receive extra tuition money through the 4YF program.

The main goal of the funding is to promote research and higher education at the five Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts. One of the many prominent grants given to postgraduate students attending the University of British Columbia is Killam Doctoral Scholarship.
