About the University of British Columbia and Scholarship

A public research institution in British Columbia, the University of British Columbia (UBC) has campuses in Kelowna and close to Vancouver. The oldest university in British Columbia was founded in 1908. One of Canada’s top 3 institutions, UBC is ranked. UBC sponsors more than 8,000 projects annually with a research budget of $759 million.

About 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of Vancouver’s downtown, the University Endowment Lands border the Vancouver campus. The biggest cyclotron in the world is located at TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for Particle and nuclear physics, which is located at UBC. The first Max Planck Institute in North America, focusing on quantum materials, was founded by UBC and the Max Planck Society in addition to the Stuart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute and Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. Over 10 million books are housed inside the 21 locations of the UBC Library system, one of Canada’s biggest research libraries. In British Columbia’s Kelowna, the Okanagan campus was bought in 2005.

Numerous post-secondary rankings include The University of British Columbia in them. The institution was placed second in Canada and 44th overall in the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities. In the 2023 QS World University Rankings, the University was rated third in Canada and 47th overall. The University is placed second in Canada and fortyth worldwide in the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The institution came in at number 35 worldwide and second in Canada in the 2022–23 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Ranking.

The University of British Columbia was placed third by the Canadian publication Maclean’s in both its reputation poll for 2023 and its category of Canadian Medical Doctoral Universities. Despite not participating in Maclean’s Graduate Survey since 2006, along with several other Canadian institutions, the university was nevertheless rated. In Newsweek’s 2011 rankings of the world’s universities, the university came in eighth overall among non-American schools and second in Canada (after the University of Toronto).

Through Dorothy J. Killam’s will and contributions received throughout her lifetime, the Killam Scholarship and Prize Programmes were created in honor of Izaak Walton Killam. Their main objective is to support the Canada Council for the Arts and five Canadian institutions that provide advanced study and research. The Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies awards the UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships each year. The recipients of scholarships should: “Be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to achieve distinction in a profession,” according to Mrs. Killam. An unbalanced person should not be a Killam scholar. Intelligent differentiation should be based on moral character.

The most prominent rewards available to graduate students at UBC are the Killam Doctoral Scholarships. In the Affiliated Fellowships competition, the top 25 doctorate candidates get about 25 grants each year. The Killam Doctoral Scholarship currently offers a $30,000 yearly stipend for two years along with a $2,000 allowance for research-related travel over the 24 months of the scholarship*.On the UBC-Vancouver campus, recipients of the Killam Doctoral Scholarships also become Four Year Fellowship holders and, if qualified, receive extra tuition money through the 4YF program.

The main goal of the funding is to promote research and higher education at the five Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts. One of the many prominent grants given to postgraduate students attending the University of British Columbia is Killam Doctoral Scholarship. In the Affiliated Fellowships competition, the top Ph.D. applicants accept about 15 to 20 scholarship prizes each year.
