About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
Proposals for a university in Queensland originated in the 1870s. In 1874, a Royal Commission led by Sir Charles Lilley advised the urgent formation of a university. Those opposed to a university contended that technical education, rather than intellectual education, was more necessary in an economy dominated by primary industries. In the face of this criticism, supporters of the institution distanced themselves from Oxford and Cambridge and offered a model based on the mid-western states of the United States. Five faculties should be included in a new university, according to advice from a second Royal Commission in 1891: arts, law, medicine, science, and applied science.
Budgets for education in Queensland were frequently given a low priority, even though basic education was more crucial than secondary and vocational education in a colony with a literacy rate of 57% in 1861. A group of private individuals established the Queensland University Extension Movement in 1893 to increase community support for a university in Queensland. They arranged public lecture courses in adult education. In 1894, there were 245 students registered in the extension sessions, and the lectures were deemed to be useful and practical. To provide interested delegates with a forum to further the idea of a university, the University Extension Movement convened the University Congress in 1906.
A draft bill creating a Queensland University was produced along with the creation of a fund. The usefulness of a university degree and its importance to Queensland’s economy were underlined. Premier Kidston of Queensland received the Congress proceedings. In October 1906, Victoria Park’s sixty acres were designated for university use.
The Maria Vasas Scholarship in Equine Science was founded in 2013 to honor Maria Vasas’ life and passions and is supported by generous grants from the Maria Vasas Foundation.

Eligibility Criteria for Maria Vasas Scholarship in Equine Science
Candidates are advised to meet the following prerequisites to be eligible for the Maria Vasas Scholarship in Equine Science at the University of Queensland:
- Be a domestic student
- Are enrolled or intend to register in the Bachelor of Equine Science (Honours)
- Do not have a scholarship that the Associate Dean (Academic) considers comparable
- Have not previously obtained the scholarship while enrolled in the present program
- Apply by the closing date.
