About the University of Essex

Why do students pick the University of Essex? The University of Essex exhibits an extraordinary dedication to excellence in teaching and research for the benefit of people and communities. It is a setting for learning where the continual advancement of professional knowledge, ability, and competence is appreciated and encouraged.

Essex, England is home to the University of Essex, a public research institution. It was one of the first institutions to use plate glass, founded in 1965 by royal license. The motto “Thought the harder, heart the keener” is taken from the Anglo-Saxon epic “The Battle of Maldon,” and the university shield has the old arms linked to the Kingdom of Essex. It has three campuses in the county, with its main campus being in Wivenhoe Park and the other two in Southend-on-Sea and Loughton.

In addition to being crowned University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards in 2018 and receiving a Gold rating for teaching excellence from the TEF since 2017, Essex is also recognized as an outstanding worldwide research-intensive university by the REF. Her Majesty, The Queen granted the Regius Professorship to Essex’s Department of Government in 2013 and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize to the university twice for its support of social and economic research in 2009 and 2017. The institution’s annual revenue for 2021–2022 was £272.6 million, of which £30.2 million came from grants and contracts for research, with an associated expenditure of £313.8 million.

Many notable graduates from Essex have achieved success in a variety of disciplines across the world, including but not limited to Nobel Prize winners, heads of state, prominent governors and politicians, business leaders and economists, scientists, artists, academics, writers, and filmmakers.
