About the University of Essex

Why do students pick the University of Essex? The University of Essex exhibits an extraordinary dedication to excellence in teaching and research for the benefit of people and communities. It is a setting for learning where the continual advancement of professional knowledge, ability, and competence is appreciated and encouraged.

Essex, England is home to the University of Essex, a public research institution. It was one of the first institutions to use plate glass, founded in 1965 by royal license. The motto “Thought the harder, heart the keener” is taken from the Anglo-Saxon epic “The Battle of Maldon,” and the university shield has the old arms linked to the Kingdom of Essex. It has three campuses in the county, with its main campus being in Wivenhoe Park and the other two in Southend-on-Sea and Loughton.
