Scotland’s Rural College Natural Leader Prize, UK 2023

Application is now open for the Scotland’s Rural College Natural Leader Prize. Interested applicants are encouraged to send their applications in before the deadline date.

About Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and Scholarship

Agriculture and the biological sciences are the main research areas of Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC; Scottish Gaelic: Colaiste Dhùthchail na h-Alba), which is located on public property. The West of Scotland Agricultural College was founded in 1899, and the current structure was created by the amalgamation of many smaller colleges.

Early in the 20th century, the Edinburgh and East of Scotland College of Agriculture and the Aberdeen and North of Scotland College of Agriculture were both founded after the founding of the West of Scotland Agricultural College in 1899. In 1990, the Scottish Agricultural College was formed by the union of these three colleges. To reorganize the school as Scotland’s Rural College, initialized as SRUC, in October 2012, the Scottish Agricultural College was amalgamated with Barony College, Elmwood College, and Oatridge College. This was done in anticipation of the institution receiving the status of a university college with the authority to grant degrees.

Scotland is home to six SRUC campuses: Aberdeen, Ayr, Barony, Elmwood, King’s Buildings, and Oatridge. Depending on the field of study, degrees are presently granted by either the University of Edinburgh or the University of Glasgow to students enrolled in land-based courses at the postsecondary level or above. The first two years of undergraduate studies are spread out across three terms every year, while the third and fourth years are divided into two semesters.

SAC Consulting, SRUC’s consulting section, works with customers in agricultural enterprises and related rural sectors in addition to higher education. SAC Consulting also has a research division that conducts research in agriculture and life sciences. Young individuals with a passion for the environment and sustainability concerns between the ages of 16 and 25 are eligible to apply for the Natural Leader prize.

The college is looking for people who have already shown they are in line with SRUC’s values to support the natural economy and care for the environment. This could be done by holding a leadership position in a school environmental council or the rangers/scouts, participating in a community gardening project or a litter-picking campaign, being active in the Young Farmers, volunteering at an animal shelter, or having a social media following that supports recycling. You may define what a natural leader is in any way you choose, but they are open to seeing as many different types of projects as they can.
