About the University of Cambridge

In Cambridge, England, there is a public collegiate research institution known as the University of Cambridge. The University of Cambridge is the third-oldest still in continuous operation, having been founded in 1209. The institution was established after the arrival of academics who had defected from the Institution of Oxford to Cambridge due to a disagreement with the local populace. Although they are sometimes referred to as rivals, the two old English institutions have many things in common and are frequently referred to as Oxbridge together. 22 years after its establishment, in 1231, King Henry III recognized the institution with a royal charter.

The University of Cambridge is made up of six schools, over 150 academic departments, faculties, and other institutions, as well as 31 constituent colleges that are semi-autonomous. All of the colleges are autonomous organizations within the university that control their own staffing and operating procedures. All university students are also expected to be affiliated with one of the colleges. The weekly small-group supervisions at the colleges serve as the main component of undergraduate instruction at Cambridge, with lectures, seminars, laboratory work, and occasionally additional supervision offered by the central university faculties and departments.

The Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge University Botanic Garden are two of the university’s eight cultural and scientific museums. A total of 16 million books are kept in Cambridge’s 116 libraries, nine million of which are in the legal deposit library and the biggest academic library in the world, Cambridge University Library. The University of Cambridge is frequently rated as one of the top five universities in the world and has even at times been named the greatest in the world.

According to QS Rankings, the University of Cambridge is now ranked second-best in the world, behind MIT, and first-best in Europe. Cambridge is ranked the fourth finest university in the world by ARWU as of 2023, behind Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. In its 2023 rankings, published by Times Higher Education, Cambridge is ranked third best in the world (tied with Stanford), following Oxford and Harvard. Most international and UK league tables place the University of Cambridge in the top five. The QS World University Rankings named it the top university in the world for both the academic years 2010–11 and 2011–12.
