About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The university has six faculties, a graduate school, and a college that grants associate, bachelor, master, doctoral, and further doctorate degrees. Over 100 research institutes and centers are part of UQ, including the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Boeing Research and Technology Australia Center, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, and UQ Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation. The institution has recently conducted some important research projects, such as generating the first cervical cancer prevention HPV vaccination, creating a COVID-19 vaccine that is currently undergoing human trials, and creating high-performance superconducting MRI magnets for on-the-go scanning of human limbs.

Among its previous employees and graduates are 117 Rhodes Scholars, 117 Olympians who have won several gold medals, two Nobel laureates (Peter C. Doherty and John Harsanyi), and more than 100. Another UQ alumnus who serves as chancellor at the University of California, San Francisco is Sam Hawgood. Other notable alumni include Dame Quentin Bryce, the first female governor-general of Australia, Ed Byrne, a former president of King’s College London, Max Lu, Tim Munro, a triple Grammy Award winner, Geoffrey Rush, an Oscar and Emmy winner, and Andrew N. Liveris, a former CEO and chairman of Dow Chemical.

The university is respected in several engineering disciplines. In terms of mining and minerals engineering, it is ranked third in the world. In terms of chemical engineering, civil engineering, material science and engineering, and electrical and electronic engineering, it is ranked 76-100th, 76-100th, and 101-150th, respectively.

In 2022, the Chiou Family created the Professor Chwei-Liang Chiou Scholarship in memory of the late Professor Chwei-Liang Chiou, who spent more than 40 years teaching at the UQ School of Political Science and International Studies. In honor of Professor Chiou’s birthplace and academic work supporting Taiwanese culture, this grant seeks to encourage students to participate in an exchange program in Taiwan.

Eligibility Criteria for Professor Chwei-Liang Chiou Scholarship

Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for Professor Chwei-Liang Chiou Scholarship at the University of Queensland:

  • Be full-time students in a program for undergraduates run by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Having completed at least 8 of the required courses via the School of Languages and Cultures, School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, or School of Communication and Arts. 
  • Have received acceptance into a Taiwanese university’s UQ Global Experiences Exchange Program.

Selection Criteria

The school will consider:

  • Academic accomplishment
  • A personal statement describing the claimed benefits of earning the Scholarship 
  • How it will enable you to participate in an exchange. 

Students majoring in a major, an extended major, or a topic of study provided by the School of Political Science and International Studies, the School of Languages and Cultures, the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, and/or the School of Communication and Arts may be granted preference.
