About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland was the first university in the state and was formally established on April 16, 1910, with the gazettal of nominations to the first UQ Senate. It was established by a 1909 Act of the State Parliament. In Brisbane’s Old Government House on George Street, education began in 1911. In the first year, there were 83 students (60 males and 23 women), and three faculties (Arts, Science, and Engineering).

Following the First World War, the University quickly outgrown its inner-city position. A second location in Victoria Park (where the Medical School is presently located) was obtained in 1922. Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister, Miss Mary Emelia Mayne, donated money four years later to purchase the St. Lucia property where the university’s main campus is presently situated. The first structure, subsequently known as the Forgan Smith structure in honor of the then-Premier, was finished in 1939 after construction on the St. Lucia site began. It served as the cutting-edge command center for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific during World War II.

The University and the Queensland Agricultural College joined in 1990 at (now Gatton), 80 kilometers west of Brisbane, uniting the two oldest institutions of higher learning in the State and significantly increasing enrollments. First students were admitted to the old Queensland Agricultural College in 1897, and the two institutions have long collaborated on teaching and research projects.

In 1999, UQ constructed a significant campus in Ipswich, the provincial capital, using the space formerly occupied by the Challinor Centre mental health hospital. To help certain students finish their degrees, UQ continued to teach at the USQ Ipswich site until 2016. This campus was transferred to the University of Southern Queensland in January 2015.

According to the Aggregate Rankings of Top Universities issued by UNSW, UQ was the 42nd best-ranked institution in the world in 2022 based on its performance across QS, THE, and ARWU. The institution is also well-regarded in several engineering-related fields. It is rated 3rd globally in mining and minerals engineering, 76-100th in chemical engineering, 76-100th in civil engineering, 101-150th in material science and engineering, and 101-150th globally in electrical and electronic engineering.

At the University of Queensland’s School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, the Rowe Scientific Foundation Scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving domestic students who are pursuing undergraduate degrees in chemistry-related fields.
