About the University of Bradford and Scholarship

The Mechanics Institute, which was established in 1832 in response to the city’s demand for workers with practical abilities, is where the university’s beginnings can be traced. The institution changed its name to Bradford Technical College in 1882. The Bradford Institute of Technology was established as a College of Advanced Technology in 1957 to handle the administration of courses for higher education. The Richmond Building, the largest structure on campus, started construction in 1963. On the other side of Richmond Road, the Horton Building and Chesham Building were soon erected.

The University of Bradford received its charter of incorporation in 1966, and Harold Wilson, the then-prime minister, was appointed as the institution’s first chancellor. With the founding of the University of Bradford Postgraduate School of Yugoslav Studies, a key institution in this endeavor, the university rose to prominence as a major worldwide hub for Yugoslav studies in the 1970s. Bradford’s Research Unit in Yugoslav Studies was founded in 1965 with a lot of help from British geographer Frederick Bernard Singleton. AnnMarie Wolpe was hired by the Bradford Department of Yugoslav Studies in 1963 after being exiled from South Africa.
