About the University Of Ottawa and Scholarship
The University of Ottawa has a rich history, dating back to its establishment on September 26, 1848, as the College of Bytown. The founding of the institution was overseen by the first Roman Catholic bishop of Ottawa, Joseph-Bruno Guigues, who entrusted its administration to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Initially located in Lower Town, the college was housed in a wooden building adjacent to the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica. However, due to limited space, the college underwent two relocations in 1852 before settling in its final location in Sandy Hill in 1856. Von Herbulis to design a fireproof replacement, Tabaret Hall, one of the first fireproof structures in Canada, constructed with reinforced concrete. The university welcomed its first female students in 1919.
In a reorganization on July 1, 1965, the University of Ottawa became an independent corporation, breaking ties with external bodies and religious organizations, and transitioning to public funding. Consequently, the civil and pontifical charters were transferred to the newly established Saint Paul University, which was federated with the corporation. The remaining civil faculties remained with the reorganized University of Ottawa.
