About University College London

Why should one attend the UCL Ear Institute? In Europe, it is the biggest interdisciplinary center for research on hearing and hearing loss. For graduate teaching and research training in the clinically relevant hearing sciences, it offers a distinctive setting.

A public research institution in London, England is known as University College London (UCL). It belongs to the Federal University of London and ranks as the second-largest university in the UK in terms of total enrollment as well as postgraduate enrollment. UCL was the first university institution to be established in London and the first in England to be completely secular and to admit students regardless of their religion. It was founded in 1826 as London University (though without the authority to grant degrees from universities), by founders who were inspired by the radical ideas of Jeremy Bentham.

In 1878, two years after University College, Bristol, it was one of the first universities to admit women alongside males. Politics drove it to adopt the status of a college in 1836 when it got a royal charter and became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London, even though it only received de facto recognition as a university in the 1990s. Its founders had intended for it to be England’s third university.

It has expanded through mergers, such as those with the Institute of Ophthalmology in 1995, the Institute of Neurology in 1997, the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in 1998, the Eastman Dental Institute in 1999, the School of Slavonic and East European Studies in 1999, the School of Pharmacy in 2012, and the Institute of Education in 2014, among others.

In each of the three major UK university league tables, UCL is listed as one of the top 10 institutions. Compared to worldwide rankings, these give more weight to instruction and the learning experience of the students by focusing on factors such as teaching quality and learning resources, admittance requirements, job prospects, the caliber of the research, and dropout rates.
