About the University of Hull and Scholarship

The University of Hull, a venerable public research institution situated in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, boasts a rich legacy dating back to its foundation in 1927 as University College Hull. Positioned at the forefront of academic excellence, the university’s main campus, nestled in the heart of Hull, hosts the prestigious Hull York Medical School, a collaborative venture with the University of York, reflecting its commitment to advancing medical education and research. Serving as a focal point for student activities and engagement, Hull University Union plays a pivotal role in enhancing the student experience.

The university’s esteemed lineage of chancellors, including notable figures such as Lord Middleton, Lord Cohen, Lord Wilberforce, Lord Armstrong, and Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone, underscores its tradition of leadership and commitment to fostering a conducive learning environment. The latest addition to this distinguished roster, Chancellor Alan Johnson, assumed office in July 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience and dedication to the university’s mission.

Designed by Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig in 1928, the university coat of arms embodies a rich tapestry of symbolism. The torch represents the pursuit of knowledge, the rose symbolizes Yorkshire, the ducal coronet pays homage to the City of Hull, the fleur-de-lys signifies Lincolnshire, and the dove, emblematic of peace, is derived from the arms of Thomas Ferens, a key figure in the university’s history. These symbols, reinterpreted, culminate in the university’s current logo. The Latin motto, “Lampada Ferens” (Bearing the Torch), ingeniously incorporates the name of the university’s founding father in a linguistic play.

Beyond academia, the University of Hull has been a pivotal partner in the city’s bid to attain the esteemed title of UK City of Culture in 2017. Actively contributing to the bid’s planning and execution, the university, along with its dedicated staff and students, actively participated in the diverse array of cultural events throughout the year.

The university extends its support to alumni seeking to further their education by introducing the University of Hull Alumni Postgraduate Scholarship. This initiative encourages alumni to pursue eligible taught master’s degrees in the academic year 2024/25, showcasing the institution’s commitment to lifelong learning and the continual enrichment of its academic community.
