The university is centered on its Merchiston, Craiglockhart, and Sighthill campuses, which make up the city of Edinburgh. It has more than 19,500 students, including those enrolled in transnational programs and attending campuses in Scotland, other countries, and online. In 2018, more than 140 countries represented by around 9,500 foreign and EU students were enrolled. Among the courses offered at Edinburgh Napier are engineering, computer science, nursing and midwifery, science, business, wood engineering, and transport studies. It provides a variety of art courses, such as those in acting, publishing, music, and product design.

Edinburgh Napier University is a nationally and globally recognized organization that has twice received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education (in 2009 and 2015) for its work in sustainable architecture, wood science, and timber engineering. A ScreenSkills-approved training institution is Screen Academy Scotland, a partnership between Edinburgh Napier University and Edinburgh College of Art (eca). Dame Judi Dench and Brian Cox serve as the academy’s patrons, while Tilda Swinton serves as an ambassador.

The Times World University Rankings place Edinburgh Napier between positions 401 and 500. Additionally, it receives five stars in the QS Stars global university rankings for teaching, internationalization, and employability. The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide ranked Edinburgh Napier as the finest modern university in Scotland, while the 2020 National Student Survey ranked Edinburgh Napier as the greatest institution for student satisfaction in Edinburgh. According to The Guardian College Guide 2017, the college was ranked top in the UK for providing value to students. This grade is calculated by tracking students from their enrollment through their graduation and contrasting their final degree award with their entry-level credentials.

The three locations where Edinburgh Napier offers student housing are Bainfield near Fountainbridge (opened in 2014), Slateford Road (launched in 2015), and Orwell Terrace (opened in 2016). Students seeking private-sector housing at Edinburgh Napier can also get support from the school.
